PALMER TOWNSHIP RECREATION BOARD

JUNE 20, 2006

 

      The regular monthly meeting of the Palmer Township recreation Board was held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 with all members in attendance except Young and Knox.  Chairman Walker opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. 

 

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING – On motion by Bellis, seconded by McBrairty, and agreed by all, the minutes of the May meeting were approved.

 

      TREASURER’S REPORT – None distributed.  Will have for next meeting.

 

      PUBLIC COMMENT – None

 

      Reports –

 

      Baseball – Home Run Derby and Palmer Day were held.  The Legion team will be playing in a wooden bat tournament at State College.

 

      Basketball – Looking for a commissioner.  There has been talk that a basketball team from Lower Nazareth has rented the gym at the community center.  Palmer teams should have them.  This is to be looking into further to find out who did this and what can be done about it.

 

      Softball – A bench was dedicated near the softball field at Fairview Park in memory of Amanda Schultz .

 

      Wrestling – Jim Worley is new Assistant Liaison.

 

      Football – About 90 signups so far.  There is still another one at the field house on June 29th.

 

      Playground – Approximately 90 children registered.  Everything is going very well.  It is very organized this year.  Quoit Boards have been purchased.  Keystone/Wolf’s Run areas are considered one session even though they are in two different parks.  Whoever signs up for one can attend the other.  Fridays are special activities held at Fairview Park.

 

      Soccer – Numbers are down from last year.

 

NEW BUSINESS –

 

      On motion by Worley, seconded by McBrairty, and agreed by all, the Board recommended to the Board of Supervisors that a liaison be appointed between the Recreation Board and the Community Center Director.   This will allow the Recreation Board to be aware of events and activities that are being planned for the center.  Cheryl Nielsen will be the Liaison from the Recreation Board.

 

      Board agreed to change the start time for the August meeting until 8:00 p.m., August 15th.

 

      A letter was received from Jim Pokrivsak, Director of Athletics of the School District stating that the high school teams need to use the Palmer complex.  They will be starting August 14th.  This letter was sent to Barry Schaffer and Bob Smith.  On motion by Bellis, seconded by McBrairty, and agreed by all, the Board voted to allow the school district use of the fields starting August 14th. 

 

      On motion by Bellis, seconded by Worley, and agreed by all, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
